ms.Autoradiographic study of [3H]paroxetine binding in human platelets. [3H]Paroxetine binds to platelet membranes in a saturable and reversible manner with a Kd of 1.3 +/- 0.3 nM and a Bmax of 17.6 +/- 3.9 pmol/mg protein. The inhibitory effect of paroxetine on serotonin (5-HT) uptake in platelets is completely reversed by 1 nM tricyclic antidepressants and the Kd of [3H]paroxetine is close to that determined for citalopram (2.3 +/- 0.4 nM) and fluoxetine (2.7 +/- 0.2 nM). These results are in agreement with the clinical efficacy of paroxetine in the treatment of depression and indicate that [3H]paroxetine is a specific and useful radioligand for the binding of antidepressants to platelets.By LAURIE OSBORNE and ANNA M. PHILLIPS, Associated Press BERLIN (AP) — A European study published Wednesday concludes that an anti-gay marriage initiative in Germany that won about 50 percent of the vote in a regional election in December is backed by more than 1 million people. The study was commissioned by opponents of the initiative, which would have made it illegal for any authority in Germany to grant same-sex couples the right to marry. "The new study shows that the measures taken by the government have caused a massive denial of rights," said Christian Lüth, one of the project's leaders. He added that the initiative — which was backed by conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union — has the backing of about 1.2 million people. The initiative, which failed in the state of Saxony, was initially opposed by rights groups and religious leaders who argued that the move could undermine Germany's tradition of being a secular society. Germany is split on the issue of same-sex marriage. Merkel's center-right Christian Democratic Union has backed the initiative, while her Social Democratic Party has opposed it. The study was commissioned by the conservative lobbying group, German Christian Democratic Union, which says it wants to be able to continue to work with the center-left Social Democrats to defend German culture. If the initiative had been passed, opponents said they expected a push for full nationwide recognition of gay marriages. Both
